Abstract

Positive correlation exists between tobacco area planted, tobacco yield per ha and the amount of capital employed while negative correlation is observed between tobacco yield per ha and maize area planted. For large-scale farms, tobacco farming experience and total tobacco area planted are important parameters explaining the variations in tobacco yield per hectare. Tobacco yield per ha is highly correlated with tobacco farming experience. tobacco Also, area planted positively correlated with farmer’s experience. is Shortage of firewood, inaccessibility of credit facility from banks and low soil fertility particularly in large scale farmers were the common problems. Recommendations encourage cultivation include of Government manageable policies farm sizes that and intensification of agricultural extension services. Others include prompt payment of sold tobacco, special credit scheme to tobacco farmers, introduction of liberalization of tobacco market and encouragement of research that aims at solving the firewood problem.
