Abstract

Land use conflicts between fanners and pastoralists in Tanzania have been identified as a serious problem. The situation has been observed in Bagamoyo District, particularly in the study area due to rapid growth of both human and livestock populations as related to land use. Survey was conducted in Buyuni. Talawanda. and Kihangaiko villages in Bagamoyo District with the major objectives of determining the causes and interventions to land use conflicts between farmers and pastoralists. One-hundred and twenty respondents, with equal numbers of farmers and pastoralists were interviewed using a questionnaire. Key informant interviews, focus group discussions, questionnaire survey and field observation were used in gathering information from local officials and members of village conflicts resolution committees. Secondary data were obtained from villages, district, regional reports and libraries The Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS version 12) was used to analyze quantitative data where as content and structural-function analysis technique was used for qualitative data. The major causes of conflicts revealed include; encroachment of grazing land by crop farmers, lack of or unclear land boundaries, shortage of land, ignorance and unplanned stock routes. Community interventions on conflicts between farmers and pastoralists were highlighted which include; the provision of education services for both parties to the conflicts, proper land demarcation, good governance, review of land policies including appropriate land use planning and village conflict resolution committees. Conflicts between farmers and pastoralists can be resolved and managed in a democratic way. Involvement of main actors (farmers and pastoralists) can contribute significantly in maintaining peace and manage conflicts between farmers and pastoralists.
