Abstract

This research paper presents a case study of a private company called Skilled and Professional Entrepreneurs limited .The case study focuses on starting of the company, performance assessment, challenges and experience. It brings practical experience of two MBA- students of Sokoine University of Agriculture on starting and operating a firm from the stage of initiating the idea, taking off, operating and achieving successful performance. The case study first describes the company’s background showing the origin of the company, composition of company’s board of directors including their education background and experiences, and the way in which the company flagship project was successfully achieved with regard to the mobilization of financial resources, planning and implementation. The study assesses the company’s performance in terms of production, sales, sourcing and use of financial resources, effectiveness of processing technology, material quality, energy consumption efficiency, processing time, raw material percentage purity and input out ratio as production performance parameters. The sales of 4,800,000/ were attained by selling 16 tones of gypsum powder and total net assets value increases from 10,499,000/= to 11,599,100/= from the start of operation in July 2006 to the end of year 2006, respectively. The case study cited extremely high demand of enterprise products, low operating and working capital and seasonal availability of raw materials as company challenges ahead. Lastly, the case study revealed that the experience on stalling, operating and managing small business is based on accumulating practical business experience and insights, anticipating problems and developing a better response capability. Starting a business is like a man's profile from pregnancy to fully matured person, where initiation stage equals pregnancy, taking off equals child birth, being in operation equals growth and attaining excellence in performance equals person fully matured stage.
