Abstract
This study was conducted to examine the impact of VECO Tanzania programme on
poverty reduction in selected rural communities of Chunya district, Mbeya region. Both
primary and secondary data were collected. Primary data were collected using checklist
and structured questionnaire. Data collected were coded and analyzed with the aid of
Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) computer software. Data analysis entailed a
number of descriptive statistics including frequencies, averages, cross tabulations and t-
independent sample tests. A multiple regression model, which tested influence of
independent variables on household income (dependent variable), was used. Results
showed that independent variables namely assets owned, crop value and off-farm activities
had positive effect on household income (at p< 0.01). In assessing the impact of VECO
Tanzania programme the three indicators: household income (from farm crops, sales of
livestock and off farm activities), ownership of assets and food securities were used.
Basing on results, this study concludes that there was no significant difference on
household income, ownership of assets and food security between programme and non
programme area. Hence therefore, the study recommends extending the programme for
another five years.
In order to increase the impact of the programme, it should be
integrated and streamlined in the council processes; in terms of planning, implementation,
monitoring and evaluation.
