Item Attacks in wireless sensor networks(IGI Global, 2016) Kibirige, George William; Sanga, Camilius A.Wireless Sensor Networks (WSN) consists of large number of low-cost, resource-constrained sensor nodes. The constraints of the WSN which make it to be vulnerable to attacks are based on their charac- teristics which include: low memory, low computation power, they are deployed in hostile area and left unattended, small range of communication capability and low energy capabilities. Examples of attacks which can occur in a WSN are sinkhole attack, selective forwarding attack and wormhole attack. One of the impacts of these attacks is that, one attack can be used to launch other attacks. This book chapter presents an exploration of the analysis of the existing solutions which are used to detect and identify passive and active attack in WSN. The analysis is based on advantages and limitations of the proposed solutions.Item ECAWsoft: A web based climate and weather data visualization for big data analysis(Global Journal of Computer Science and Technology: H Information & Technology, 2017-03) Tumbo, Siza D.; Kadeghe, Fue G.; Sanga, Camilius A.In Tanzania, data for climate and weather are normally analyzed by Meteorological Agency and then are published through TV, website and radio. Different stakeholders normally obtain the weather and climate data / information in a generalized way. This calls for a need of a system which allows data to be shared openly to different stakeholders so that they can analyze those data as per their specific needs. Design/methodology/approach: The paper presents the overview of the developed system, ECAWsoft. Also, it gives some few interfaces showing different outputs from the system. Findings: The goal of this paper has been attained by developing a working data visualization tool for climate and weather called ECAWsoft. The system is current operational and is providing open data for different stakeholders.Item Evaluation of livestock information network knowledge system (LINKS) based on user satisfaction(International Journal of Information and Communication Technology Research, 2016-08-08) Mussa, Mussa; Kipanyula, Maulilio J.; Angello, Consolata; Sanga, Camilius A.The advancement of technology has brought low cost mobile phones which are affordable to majority of livestock keepers and traders in Kilosa District. The Government of Tanzania has developed livestock market information system which offers markets and market information for different livestock products. The system was established to enhance the bargaining power of livestock keepers to traders and middlemen in livestock markets. Thus the ultimate goal of the developed system was to create a platform to link farmers and lenders, as well as farmers and buyers. Despite the potential of the developed system, few livestock keepers are using it. This study was designed to evaluate the usability of the livestock market information system as well as the causes of its limited use. The Software Usability Measurement Inventory approach for usability was used during system evaluation to gauge user’s satisfaction. The results indicate that development of the livestock market information system was not participatory enough. The majority of respondents indicated that the mapping of information needs was inadequate and therefore, information contents provided by the system do not meet user requirements. The results indicate the need to adopt user centred systems development involving all stakeholders in all phases of software development life cycle. Hence there is a need to improve up to date publication of market information to enable users to get reliable prices via web and mobile phones.Item Experimenting open agricultural extension service in Tanzania: A case of Kilosa Open Data Initiative (KODI)(Journal of Scientific and Engineering Research, 2016) Sanga, Camilius A.; Masamaki, Joseph Phillipo; Fue, Kadeghe G.; Mlozi, Malongo R.; Tumbo, Siza D.This paper presents results from the application of Open Data System to improve coverage of agricultural extension services using web-based and mobile-based farmers‘ advisory information Ushaurikilimo in Kilosa District. The research adopted a participatory action research method to develop the interventions. The findings from this study show that farmers and other actors get timely, relevant and personalized advisory services. The user interface of the Open System hosting Open Data is in Swahili language, a language widely spoken in the study area, which enhanced adoption of the system. The Open System did not require farmers and other actors to pay for the services, which motivated to attract farmers and actors to adopt the system. In order to lower the cost of implementing the project, agricultural extension officers in study villages were used to receive questions from farmers and provided answers, and sent difficulty questions to experts from Sokoine University of Agriculture to answer via their mobile phones.Item Factors influencing smallholder farmers to participate in farmer-led research of agro-ecological practices in selected areas, Tanzania(Journal of Agricultural Extension and Rural Development, 2021-09-23) Kihoma, Luambano; Churi, Ayubu J.; Sanga, Camilius A.; Tisselli, EugenioDeclining crop productivity is a great challenge facing smallholder farmers in Tanzania. Agro-ecological practices can improve crop productivity in a sustainable way and produce healthy food among smallholder farmers. Initiation of “Farmer-Led Research of Agro-Ecological Practices” (FLRAG) may enhance farmers’ capacities for innovation and co-develop suitable agro-ecological practices. This study aimed at identifying factors influencing smallholder farmers to participate in FLRAG. A cross- sectional survey was used to collect qualitative and quantitative data from 90 smallholder farmers in Mvomero, Bagamoyo and Masasi districts in Tanzania. Data were also collected from key informants who were extension officers. The study identified that experience in farming, easiness in accessing agro-ecological inputs, interest in doing experiments and farm size ownership are the factors that substantially influence smallholder farmers to participate in FLRAG. Therefore, researchers are advised to select participants of FLRAG by considering the mentioned factors. Furthermore, farmers selected to participate in FLRAG are advised to the use of ugunduzi app” that was developed purposefully to enhance agro-ecological research in order to test and understand its potential on smoothing agro- ecological research activities.Item Harnessing multi-stakeholders involvement in result based aquaculture (HASIRA) Extension Service in Tanzania(IGI Global, 2017) Tarimo, Bernard Ronald; Sanga, Camilius A.The wide spread of mobile phones to many actors of aquaculture value chain have brought a new opportunity for enhancing access to aquaculture advisory and extension service in developing countries. Despite the potential shown by mobile phones in provision of other social economic services to both rural and urban communities, there are few studies presented how these tools facilitate access to aquaculture extension service among aquaculture farmers in the country, Tanzania. This article assesses how mobile phones can facilitate the provision of aquaculture extension service among aquaculture farmers in Tanzania. The article establishes an understanding on how aquaculture extension service is provided to aquaculture farmers through mobile phones using UshauriKilimo. UshauriKilimo is an agro-advisory and extension system which is now in use for more than two years. The article contributes to the existing body of knowledge with respect to ICT mediated aquaculture extension.Item Mobile edge computing: cost-efficient content delivery in resource-constrained mobile computing environment(International Journal of Mobile Computing and Multimedia Communications, 2019) Mahenge, Michael P. J.; Li, Chunlin; Sanga, Camilius A.The overwhelming growth of resource-intensive and latency-sensitive applications trigger challenges in legacy systems of mobile cloud computing (MCC) architecture. Such challenges include congestion in the backhaul link, high latency, inefficient bandwidth usage, insufficient performance, and quality of service (QoS) metrics. The objective of this study was to find out the cost-efficient design that maximizes resource utilization at the edge of the mobile network which in return minimizes the task processing costs. Thus, this study proposes a cooperative mobile edge computing (coopMEC) to address the aforementioned challenges in MCC architecture. Also, in the proposed approach, resource- intensive jobs can be unloaded from users’ equipment to MEC layer which is potential for enhancing performance in resource-constrained mobile devices. The simulation results demonstrate the potential gain from the proposed approach in terms of reducing response delay and resource consumption. This, in turn, improves performance, QoS, and guarantees cost-effectiveness in meeting users’ demands.Item Towards developing a fast reliable instant e-learning networks of distributed systems (friends) for higher education institutions in Tanzania(Nova Science Publishers, 2022) Mahenge, Michael P. J.; Sanga, Camilius A.The accessibility, availability and affordability of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) in developing countries has brought new opportunities in improving learning and teaching in Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) through E-Learning. The overwhelming development of resource-intensive contents such as video streaming, simulations, Virtual Reality (VR), augmented reality (AR), 3D graphic visualization, and others emerging educational technologies used for E-Learning applications has not only resulted into enhancing education delivery but also it has caused challenges in performance and capacity of smart mobile devices. Consequently, this chapter proposes a Mobile Edge Computing (MEC) supporting E-learning framework to reinforce learning processes in HEIs which are geographically sparsely distributed systems in different locations. Moreover, by leveraging the advanced capacity of MEC framework such as offloading, content caching closer to users, and ability to collaborate with the cloud computing, it enhances flexibility in learning, content sharing and guarantees cost-efficient learning with minimum response time. Thus in order to determine the potential of the proposed MEC-supported E-learning framework, we designed a case study and configured it in a simulation environment using edgeCloudSim simulator. The results demonstrate that the proposed framework improves average response time and content download time.Item Virtual labs versus hands-on labs for teaching and learning computer networking: a comparison study(International Journal of Research Studies in Educational Technology, 2017-01-16) Shimba, Martin; Mahenge, Michael P. J.; Sanga, Camilius A.The purpose of this study was to determine the effectiveness of simulation approach (virtual labs) versus hands on labs approach for teaching and learning computer networking skills in Higher Learning Institutions in Tanzania. The study was conducted at Sokoine University of Agriculture. The theoretical framework which guided this study is Experiential Learning Theory. Experiments were conducted involving configuring Virtual LAN using simulation and hands on Lab approach for teaching and learning. The experiment involved control group and experimental group. In a control group students were taught using Hands on Lab approach while in experiment group students were taught using Simulation approach. In a control group, students were able to configure VLAN and verify or troubleshoot the connection while in the experimental group students configured VLAN with difficulty and failed to verify the connection. From the analysis of data obtained from instructors, it was found that simulation approach is used to a greater extent compared to hands on labs. The reason for this is because of the shortage of tools and hence, instructors rely mostly on the use of simulation approach. Furthermore, students considered both simulation and hands on lab approaches as useful teaching methods to enhance teaching and learning of computer networking skills. Students preferred hands on lab approach to be used over simulation approach due to different reasons including: hands on lab approach enables students to acquire practical or concrete skills and problem solving skills compared to simulation approach. Therefore from the results of this study, hands on lab approach is more effective for imparting practical and problem solving skills, knowledge and competency to students compared to simulation approach.
