Abstract
Kabanima (Kb), Canadian Wonder (CW) and Selian
Wonder (SW) bean varieties were investigated on their
growth and seed yield as influenced by variety, sowing
date and mulching.
Mulching promoted effective primary
branches/plant, vegetative growth - plant height, leaf
number, leaf area, leaf area index (LAI) but depressed
plant uptake of Mg and K, shelling percentage, grain
yield and water-use efficiency (WUE).
Mulching appears
undesirable under high soil moisture conditions, it
should be encouraged only in arid conditions*
CW gave 154, SW 124% higher grain yield than Kb.
CW outyielded SW by 124%.
Kb was taller, thicker, had
more leaves at maturity, greater leaf area, LAI and total
plant dry weight but lower N, K and Mg at blooming, lower
pod dry weight, shelling percentage, grain yield and WUE
than CW and SW.
Mid-March planting gave the highest grain yield and
WUE. Plant height at maturity increased with subsequent
sowing date because of increased favourable moisture
conditions.
Mid-March planting appears the best date of
planting beans under Morogoro conditions*
White Mould outbreak in mid-March planting depressed(iv)
leaf area and LAI but promoted grain yield.
White Mould resistance was observed in two GW plants that exhibited
the primitive trailing habit..
Bean leaf N, P, K decreased from seedling to
flowering stage in respective values of 4.96 to 4.22%,
0.39 to 0.29% and 5.14 to 2.61%; Ca and Mg increased from.
0.72 to 1.37% and 0.60 to 0.63% in the same growth
stages, respectively.
Nutrient uptake by bean plant is
influenced by variety, growth stage and directly or
indirectly by soil moisture in different dates and
mulches.
Pod yield,shelling percentage, 100 grain weight and
seed number/pod and pod length exerted positive influence
on grain yield unlike plant height, LAI, leaf number and
days to 50% flowering.
