Impact of PADEP interventions on socio-economic well being: a case of Nachingwea district, Tanzania

PADEP was introduced in Nachingwca District in 2003/2004 and phased out in 2009/2010, the major aim being increasing crop and livestock productivity. This research aimed at determining the impacts of PADEP intervention as there are claims that famine and low levels of household income still exist despite PADEP having empowered communities through imparting agricultural knowledge and skills. This study determined the impacts of PADEP intervention on socio-economic well-being of rural communities in Nachingwea District. The specific objectives were to: identify rural farmers’ perception on PADEP interventions, determine PADEP impacts on communities’ socio-economic well-being, and determine socio-economic factors hindering community’s development. Primary data were collected through interview schedules whereby 80 respondents from different projects in 30 villages were obtained through random selection between January and March, 2012. The research findings noted two major limitations to community development which are high costs of inputs and erratic rains. Research results also indicated that communities have a positive perception toward the PADEP project implementation due to good impacts that PADEP has proven to them including increase in crop and livestock production. It was concluded that rural farmers had positive notion on PADEP interventions as pointed out by 45% of the respondents and that 93.8% of the respondents had received agricultural training. Erratic rainfall was reported by 33.8% the respondents to be the major farmers’ development hindrance. Recommendations made include giving chance to the communities to identify the major problem facing them, considering that PADPE helped farmers to increase productivity to their crops and livestock.
