The sample of six (6) villages composed of four villages affected with banana bacterial wilt disease and two villages without disease were selected for this study using purposive and random sampling technique respectively. Simple random sampling technique was employed to select 20 affected households and 15 not affected households from each affected village. Also 30 households were ✓ randomly selected from not affected villages making a total of 200 households. A structured questionnaire was used to collect data from the sample households. Data were coded, entered and analysed using the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) version 11.5 and Excel computer programs. Comparison of means was done using independent t-test to verify if there were any differences in the variables between households with and without the disease. Results on banana yield reveals that, there were significant differences in mean yields of banana between affected and unaffected households in all sampled villages with the exception of Ngando village, meaning they were food insecure. Further more all affected household in sampled villages with the exception of Ngando village had an average income below the poverty line meaning they had low income. Majority of the affected households planted different crops in the uprooted areas; most planted crops are maize 32.8% and maize intercropped with cassava 22.5% while those who have no alternative crop to plant were 21.3% households. Most of the affected households were engaged into labour selling (42.5%) to different agricultural enterprises.
